The idea of a freemium FIFA is a strange one, but EA’s made it work. For no money at all, you get access to a surprisingly generous amount of content, including a tense penalty shoot-out mode, and ‘game of the week’, which is regularly updated with new teams.

There’s also a trade-based Ultimate Team mode, which is a bit like someone mashed Top Trumps and FIFA together with a fork. (There is IAP, note, but it’s only necessary if you want the cup/league mode or fancy buying ‘packs’ of players for Ultimate Team.)

The gameplay also hits the back of the net, enabling you to choose from a console-like experience or surprisingly playable touchscreen controls that are bound to appeal to more casual gamers.
